Open mouth, insert foot

If you believe all of the media hype over the last few weeks, then you likely were of the opinion that the Democrats were a shoe-in to take over one or both houses of Congress.

(begin rant)

I for one am sick of all the craziness that's been going on over the last few weeks.  Candidates fighting each other and attacking each other personally.  It seems that every campaign has turned negative and that very few candidates (on either side of the aisle) are giving voters a good reason to get out and vote.  I'm still undecided on if I'm even going to bother voting next week.

(end rant)

This hype is not new of course.  Every election year the Democrats and the media say there is going to be a major shift in their direction, and every year they find a way to mess it up.  Don't get me wrong - I'm glad they mess it up every year.  It just amazes me that they never learn from their mistakes.  Two stories that prove my point...

1.  From this story.  John Kerry's comments yesterday at a campaign rally at a college in Massachusetts.

You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq

How stupid can you be? !!! Surely even people against the war in Iraq will have major problems with this amazing attack on our troops that are fighting in a war RIGHT NOW!!!  WOW!!  On top of that, getting "stuck in Iraq" (man, I want to puke just thinking about that comment) has NOTHING to do with your grades, or even whether or not you are in college!

2.  From a local story here in Memphis that is getting national attention.  Harold Ford's comments at a campaign stop in Paris, TN:

"My friend Lincoln Davis, who chairs this campaign, says there is one big difference between us and ... Republicans when it comes to our faith," Ford said. "He said 'Republicans fear the Lord. Democrats fear and love the Lord.'"

Dude, what were you thinking?!!  Does anyone believe this rhetoric?  Does anyone even think that talk like this is appropriate in ANY CONTEXT?  Man, I hope not.  While I'm at it - this article also mentions a Ford campaign ad that was filmed in a church and that Bill Clinton is scheduled to headline a rally for Ford in a church in Memphis today.  Wow man.  I still can't figure out how Democrats continually get away with holding CAMPAIGN RALLIES in churches and how Republicans can't even express their opinion at a church without the ACLU going nuts.  The double standard there amazes me.  Bill Clinton?  Speaking at a church?  Come on people!

Anyway, there are plenty of other stories.  If the Democrats end up losing some seats by close margins, they have nobody but themselves to blame.  When are they going to learn?  Hopefully never I guess.  Although, I am starting to believe that Republican victories are making them way to cocky, so I wouldn't really mind a good scare or even a few losses to get them back in line.

I know it's been a while since I've posted here.  I have a few things I'd like to comment on.  Maybe I'll get a chance to do that soon.  In the meantime, someone sent this to me today and I thought it was really good.

Danny Is RIGHT - reaching out

I'm just a white boy from Mississippi.  I haven't traveled the world and I don't know very much about other cultures.  So when an opportunity comes for me to reach out to people who speak or act differently than I do, I try to take advantage of it.

With that in mind, all jive\ebonics speakers out there can click on the link below to view my blog in their language.  Even renamed!

NASCAR talk

Two topics related to NASCAR have been on my mind lately....

Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson - two peas in a pod

My two year old doesn't whine as much as Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson.  Gordon finds something to complain about in every race, whether it be a teammate "racing too hard" or getting caught in a wreck that must have been caused by "excessive bump-drafting", he just can't stop whining.  And of course, Jeff doesn't race hard or bump draft at all.  Noooooo.  Jimmie Johnson is just as bad.  He complained this weekend when his soon-to-be-former teammate Brian Vickers (maybe accidentally) wrecked him out at the end of the race.  Well, you know what Jimmie?  I've seen you and you're buddy Jeff do this to teammates and non-teammates countless times.  As a matter of fact, I think it was last year that you cost Brian Vickers a win by causing him to get loose at the end of a race.  Don't dish it out if you can't take it.  Brian Vickers should be glad to get out of there.  He should run out of there ASAP!  I feel sorry for Casey Mears.  Going into a team with Gordon, Johnson, and Kyle Busch.  The first meeting he'll be involved in will be about not accepting responsibility for anything.

The Chase - to change or not to change

Lots of talk is going on about how best to change the Chase to be more "fair" or "open".  NASCAR has announced that changes are coming, but hasn't announced what they are.  So a bunch of analysts are creating ways to change it.  I for one think it is pretty darn good as it stands.  We have six races left in the Chase and five people are within 51 points of the leader.  Excitement?  Yep!  Isn't that really what the Chase is about - being more exciting?  I'd say mission accomplished there.  I understand people being upset when their driver doesn't make the Chase, but come on people.  Does your favorite Football, Baseball, etc team make it to the playoffs every year?  Don't think so.  I just hope they don't water it down too much.  Racers can't make the Chase strictly because the fans want them in it.  NASCAR should always be performance based.  If any changes are made, I'd like to see the points completely reset before the Chase.  So maybe positions 1-10 are separated by 5 points each as is now, then 11-20 are separated by 10 points each, etc, etc.  That might be considered more fair, plus it would add the possibility of someone racing their way from outside 10th place into the title.  Hopefully whatever they do will be considered good enough to leave alone for a little while.  They are never going to please everybody so at some point they have to say it is the way it is.
