Yep, must be about race

This one is a major ARGH!!! for me.  I just can't believe the logic.

So last night I was watching Sports Center and the Pardon the Interruption crew...um...interrupted :)....to talk about Texas A&M and Ole Miss both hiring new coaches recently.

The topic was whether or not they should have looked at more than one coach.  Actually, that wasn't the full topic.  The topic was whether or not they should have looked at at least one black coach.  And both of the PTI guys said YES!!!

WHAT??!!

They said that the Affirmative Action (or whatever it's called) policy in the NCAA to promote more "diversity" in coaching positions should have a stipulation that a black coach is at least interviewed.  Even if the school has already pretty much picked the guy (sorry, or gal) they want.

UM....WHAT???!!!!

What kind of stupid logic is that??!!!  Come on people!!!

What sense does it make to fly a guy in for an interview that you have no intention of hiring??!!!  So we want to get a bunch of folks hopes up that they might get a multi-million dollar job when there is no chance they will be hired??!!!  All for the sake of "diversity"??!!!!

They also said a good reason was in case the folks making the hiring decision will have the black coach as a contact several years down the road if they ever have to make or recommend such a position again.  That's the only reason that actually made some sense.  But, why does it only have to be done for black coaches??!!  Heck, call in every coach, assistant coach, water boy, cheerleader, and fan for an interview!!  Fill up your rolodex with a bunch of unqualified people just in case you need them later.  Heck, call me in!  You never know when you might need a software developer one day!

Finally, let's THINK a little bit people!  So we call in a bunch of black coaches who aren't gonna get the job.  Um, and they start to figure out there is no chance they will get the job.  How is that not RACIST??!!!!!!!!!!  That is the definition of racism in my book.  Picking someone out based on their skin color and treating them poorly.

Just plain stupid.  I didn't really care for the PTI folks to begin with.  They weren't funny or insightful.  Now I can add that they are idiots to the list of reasons why I don't like them.

Tuesday Thoughts

Some things have been on my mind the last few days.  Time to get them out...

Dog

I'll start by saying that Dog the Bounty Hunter is one of my favorite shows.  But I never have claimed to be impartial either.  :)

Anyway, so Dog makes a PRIVATE phone call to his son.  And says some things that are....well....politically incorrect.  I would say racist, but I think if you read his comments in context you will see that he wasn't being racist at all.  But he did use a racist slur several times.  Then his son decides he's mad at Dog and sells a tape the (again PRIVATE) conversation to the awesome news source that is the National Enquirer.  Now Dog's show on A&E has been pulled off the air and all indications are that it will be canceled.  Ridiculous!  The only good thing here is that his son likely broke the law by selling the tape without Dog's permission, so maybe he'll get in trouble for that.

Don't get me wrong, Dog shouldn't have said what he said.  But again, his conversation was in PRIVATE!!!  The actions taken against him by A&E are crazy.

Writer's strike

As you know, I'm pretty hard on labor unions on this blog.  I think they are unnecessary, have too much power, and promote laziness in the workforce.  But, there is a strike going on right now that I think is probably the first one I've seen that I could actually agree with.

Yesterday, television show writers went on strike because they felt they should be paid when the shows that they write gets sold for syndication, DVD sales, and online viewing.  They are absolutely RIGHT!  While the actors on these shows are good, there can be no mistaking that the real talent is the writers.  How many good actors have been on bad shows?  Here's an example - how many actors were on Seinfeld but didn't do squat on other shows?  What's the reason?  Writing!

Am I saying I think the union was a good thing in this case?  Maybe.  But I also think the writers could have organized this without a union.

Ron Paul's big day

About a month ago, some supporters of Ron Paul put together a website called This November 5th.  The goal of this site was to sign up 100,000 people to give $100 to Ron Paul's campaign on November the 5th, for a total of $10 million.  Yesterday (November 5th), over $4 million was raised.  According to Ron Paul's website, this was done by about 35,000 separate donations.  Amazing!

Congratulations to ThisNovember5th.com and to Ron Paul.  Really neat to see such an effort do so well, even though its goal was not met.  By the way, that is the most any candidate has raised in one day so far in this election cycle.  The record is held by John Kerry, who took in $5.1 million when he accepted the Democratic nomination in 2004.  That should put some perspective on how strong the Ron Paul Revolution is.
