Ok, I'm a little late on blogging this. But something has been bugging me for a while now and last night's game just magnified it. I was IM'ing someone and I got all fired up about it. Must mean it's time to blog.
Ok, so I'll start with my main point.
FREE THROWS ARE A FUNDAMENTAL PART OF BASKETBALL
Oh, and while I'm at it.
MAKING SHOTS IS A FUNDAMENTAL PART OF BASKETBALL
I'm going to also start out by saying that I do not follow basketball all that much. Heck, I only watched half of the game last night. And have not watched a full game all year, even with Memphis doing as well as they did all year.
The reasons are stated in the points above. I used to love basketball. I used to love Memphis State (no one who reads this blog will be confused by that I'm sure) basketball especially. Now I can't stand to watch it. Because players have forgotten what the goal of the sport is. They are too focused on putting on a show instead of the fundamentals of the game. The last basketball game I went to was a couple of years ago. Both teams shot barely 50%. It made me sick.
So I'm probably going to be the only one in Memphis to say this. They deserved to lose.
I like Coach Cal a lot. I think he's a great coach. I wish he would stay in Memphis until he was ready to retire. The stuff that he's done with the program over at Memphis is awesome. But he simply missed it on this deal. He said free throws didn't matter. To quote the Waterboy - "You wrong Colonel Sanders"...er...Coach Cal.
When his players were missing all those free throws during the season, he should have wore them out. For each free throw that any player missed, he should have had EVERY PLAYER shooting an hour as punishment for the miss. That would have solved the problem.
And it would have brought a championship to Memphis.
