Yep, must be about race

Ok, I know this is probably a product that won't be used much, even by its target audience.  But I have to point it out.

There is a new browser out there called BlackBird.  And as you probably guessed, it's target audience is black people.  When I first read about it I just thought it was pretty silly, but after thinking about it some more I kinda got burned up.

Here is the article I read that pointed to this site.  Check out the comments.  Many of them explain my thought process.  Such as what kind of news would it make if there was a "WhiteBird" browser - one that was all about finding and socializing with white people?  Think that would stir some people up?

I think this comment speaks volumes...

Ok, as a member of the black community, I must say this is not the way to go and I haven’t even tried it out. We must stop creating a “black” this and a “black” that! Can’t we figure out another way for the tech community to recognize our presence? Just because you slap “black” on something doesn’t make it automatically accepted. What’s next? A browser for black basketball players, podcatchers for blacks… Please stop the madness… Ok, stepping down off the soapbox…..

And this one...

Okay, as a member of the white community, I totally agree with you. The civil rights movement heroically fought to end segregation, yet this site is totally self-segregating. It is counter productive to an integrated society.

MLK just rolled over in his grave…

And one more...

Really? Really? I am black and I find this to be a complete waste of time and a set back for what they believe they are trying to achieve. People scream about equality but continue to separate themselves from the pack.

I look forward to the web browser for light skinned African Americans, dark skinned African Americans, bald headed African Americans, African American doctors, etc. You know, I really think we can dig down deeper and segregate the African American community a little more.

Those folks are exactly RIGHT!  There is no reason for there to be a separate browser for a certain ethnic group.  It's RACIST to only care about what is going on with people of your own skin color.  And speaking as a software developer, it's STUPID for software developers to accommodate racists in this way.

Hey, here's a novel idea.  Build a browser with a feature called "Favorites" or "Bookmarks".  This feature will allow people of ALL skin colors and interests to save sites they like to visit.  If you find a site you like, you can email it to friends\family who share your same interests and they can "bookmark" it too if they want.  That way, people can make up their own mind about what they like.  Wow, what a simple concept that should be easy to implement.  Oh....wait...
